Forget James Maddison, ‘outstanding’ 27-year-old could end up being Tottenham’s signing of the season

Amid all of the chaos against Chelsea last night, Guglielmo Vicario finally put to bed any doubters he’s had since signing for Tottenham Hotspur this season.

Vicario set the tone very early on when saving quite brilliantly against Nicolas Jackson at close range.

And that was a save that caused Gary Neville to declare his new position on the goalkeeper.

Neville admitted during Sky Sports’ live coverage of the game that he was a little unsure of Vicario when he first arrived.

However, he confirmed that opinion had now changed in the wake of another ‘outstanding’ performance.

Moreover, Neville hasn’t been Vicario’s only doubter, Mark Schwarzer also previously voiced his uncertainty over the keepers’ longevity at Spurs.

And despite all of this, the £17m that Tottenham paid for Vicario this summer could end up being their best signing of the season.

James Maddison is a bargain at £40m, but Tottenham look to have secured one of the most promising keepers in Europe for a snip of the usual price.

Vicario not only embodies the style that Ange Postecoglou wants to play, but he also displayed the necessary character last night.

Guglielmo Vicario could end up proving Totteham’s signing of the season

If Tottenham fans need an example of how difficult it can be for a keeper suddenly arriving at a top club, they need only look across North London.

David Raya is having something of a torrid time at Arsenal amid all of the ‘will he, won’t he’ with Aaron Ramsdale.

And Ange Postecoglou’s strong faith in Vicario as his number one is now paying dividends.

It must also be noted that this was no easy call, Hugo Lloris is still at the club and has been a stalwart in recent memory.

And it’s testament to how well Ange has managed the situation that all is still harmonious.

Tottenham have made some brilliant signings this season, and fans will be excited to see what Ange can do in January.

But looking back to the summer, Guglielmo Vicario may even end up proving to be a more astute deal than both Maddison and Micky van de Ven – two brilliant additions in their own right.
