‘We were trying’… Peter Grant shares how West Ham tried to sign Celtic Invincibles hero before the Bhoys

The Celtic Invincibles is a side that will go down in history as legends in the eyes of the Hoops fans.

Not only did they go a full season unbeaten, they also won the treble that kicked off the run to the world record Quadruple Treble.

That was a sensational period in Celtic’s recent history and one that is unlikely to be matched anywhere in the world.

And the players that played for that side were truly immense. From Moussa Dembele to Craig Gordon, to a man they were all superb that season.

But it could have all been so different for Craig Gordon. Because as Peter Grant is about to point out before the Scotland international joined Celtic on a free transfer in 2014, the former Celtic hero tried to steal him from under his old club’s nose.

Grant said [The Go Radio Football Show], “It’s funny because I remember phoning Stevie Woods about him. I can’t remember if it was at Birmingham or West Ham even and Craig had been at Sunderland and got the injury.

“I said, ‘Could you tell us where Craig Gordon is because he’s a top-quality goalkeeper’.

“He said, ‘We’ve had him in training with us he just wants to see how it goes.’ And then Celtic signed him.

“And we were trying to get him to come to us. And we were going to offer him a contract because we knew he was a top-quality goalkeeper.

“And we knew the fact that he’d been training with a Celtic and a Rangers, we thought, well, his fitness level can’t be a problem.

“So we were going to actually offer him a contract and Celtic tied him down before he got out the building.”

Craig Gordon had tremendous success over his five-year spell at Celtic. As well as lifting an Invincibles Treble, Gordon also picked up a further five league titles, three Scottish Cups and four League Cups.

In fact, Gordon was close to becoming part of the Quadruple Treble heroes but he left the club before the 2020 Scottish Cup Final was played due to COVID.

Gordon is now making his comeback from a serious knee injury at Hearts as the 40-year-old continues his remarkable football career.
