‘That’s unusual’… BBC pundit confused by what happened with Tottenham forward

Tottenham Hotspur forward Brennan Johnson was in action for Wales in their Euro 2024 qualifier on Tuesday night.

The Spurs gem helped his nation record a 1-1 draw with Turkey at the Cardiff City Stadium in their final group qualifying match.

Johnson was bright in the game, regularly looking a threat in behind, and managed to find the back of the net, only for it to be disallowed for a narrow offside.

The Tottenham man also received a yellow card in the 23nd minute of the game for dissent after he argued with a Turkish player following a foul on Harry Wilson just outside the box.

BBC Sport pundit and former Wales international Nathan Blake was confused as to why referee Matej Jug only booked Johnson and not the Turkey player.

“Just Brennan Johnson (booked), that’s unusual? Once two players go head to head…” he said on BBC Radio Wales, via the BBC Sport website.

Bittersweet night for Tottenham ace Brennan Johnson

This was one of numerous contentious decisions made by the referee during the game.

For instance, he waved away a penalty appeal from Wales after Johnson was brought down by Samet Akaydin inside the box.

Meanwhile, Jug went on to award a soft spot kick to Turkey in the second half – which they converted – after Ben Davies was adjudged to have fouled Kenan Yildiz.

Admittedly, Croatia’s 1-0 win over Armenia meant that, even if Wales won, they wouldn’t have qualified automatically for the finals of Euro 2024.

Johnson will now return to Tottenham hoping to help his club side bounce back following their recent downturn in form.

The 21-year-old has been featuring often after returning from a hamstring injury, and scored for Spurs in their loss to Wolves last time out.
