Spurs eyeing £25m defender Carlo Ancelotti deemed a ‘pleasure’ to work with

Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with Everton defender Ben Godfrey ahead of the January transfer window.

For instance, 90Min reported in November that Spurs were one of several Premier League teams checking in on the 25-year-old.

More recently, football.london reported that Godfrey is expected to be allowed to leave this winter after being edged out of the team under Sean Dyche.

The likes of James Tarkowski, Michael Keane and Jarrad Branthwaite are currently ahead of the reported Tottenham target at centre-back.

Now, there may well be some wondering whether a player who is out of favour at a relegation-battling club would be the right fit for Spurs.

However, if any manager can get a struggling player back to his best, it’s Ange Postecoglou. He’s done the same with the likes of Yves Bissouma.

Tottenham target Ben Godfrey deemed ‘very good’ by Carlo Ancelotti

Godfrey seems to have lost his way a bit at Everton, but when he first arrived, he was doing well and even got into the England squad.

Carlo Ancelotti thought highly of the reported Tottenham target. In 2021, he told The Guardian: “If Gareth (Southgate) is watching Ben Godfrey then he is right.

“Gareth doesn’t need advice from me but to see and watch Ben Godfrey at this moment, in this period, is a pleasure for any manager.

“He has surprised me because I didn’t know him so well [when he signed]. He was a signing from the club, from our scouts, and he has been really good.

“He’s been able to adapt very quickly to different positions.”

Meanwhile, former teammate Grant Hanley told the All In Yellow podcast in 2021, via The Athletic: “You don’t need me to tell you that Ben is going to be a top player.

“I wouldn’t be surprised to see him playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world because he has that potential.”

Godfrey is certainly worth a chance for Tottenham in January. He wouldn’t be the first player from an ailing club to then shine when given a chance elsewhere.

Just look at the likes of Georginio Wijnaldum and Andrew Robertson at Newcastle and Liverpool respectively.
