Newcastle will now try to sign £40m player on loan, Eddie Howe a big fan

Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United will try to sign Manchester City midfielder Kalvin Phillips in the January transfer window.

That is according to The Times, which has also noted Newcastle’s plan regarding Paris Saint-Germain striker Hugo Ekitike.

So, what is being reported about Newcastle United, Kalvin Phillips and Hugo Ekitike? Let’s take a look.

What’s the story?

Well, according to The Times, Newcastle United want to sign midfielder Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City and striker Hugo Ekitike from Paris Saint-Germain in the January transfer window.

Newcastle manager Eddie Howe personally wants Phillips and is “a long-term admirer” of the England international midfielder, who cost City £40 million in transfer fees when they signed him from Leeds United in the summer of 2022 (The Times).

The Times has claimed that Newcastle will propose a loan deal to City and Phillips. The same report has stated that the Magpies will propose a loan move with the possibility of a permanent deal to PSG for striker Ekitike.

Kalvin Phillips and Hugo Ekitike on loan would be a coup for Newcastle United

In my opinion, if Newcastle United are able to sign Kalvin Phillips and Hugo Ekitike on loan deals in the January transfer window, then it would be a massive coup for them.

Phillips may have failed to make an impact at Manchester City, but we know that the England international midfielder is one of the best players around. Arsenal star Declan Rice rates him highly.

Phillips was a success for Leeds United, first in the Championship and then in the Premier League, and he could recover his form at Newcastle.

While Ekitike has failed to make an impact at Paris Saint-Germain, that PSG signed him in the first place shows just how good he is. West Ham United are keen on him as well.
