13 goals in 13 games… Striker who West Ham missed out on last summer is now ‘flying’

West Ham United have struggled to find a top striker to lead their line for almost all of David Moyes’ tenure at the club thus far.

Michail Antonio has shouldered the burden alone for most of the past few years, a striker who could do with some competition.

And harping back to last summer, it did seem as if the club had made the position a priority, yet no forward was signed.

In fact, they only lost an interesting option in Gianluca Scamacca.

One player they reportedly did want to sign, Viktor Gyokeres, is now glowing with Sporting Lisbon, a player who has scored 13 goals in 13 games.

And Fabrizio Romano has now been discussing the future of the striker who is already attracting interest from top clubs in Europe.

Taking to X, Romano discussed his form and the growing intrigue.

He said: “Viktor Gyökeres, flying on his first season at Sporting as he scored 13 goals in 13 starts.

“Sporting, more than happy with their record €24m investment made to sign Viktor from Coventry in the summer.

“Multiple top clubs keeping close eye on Gyökeres for the future.”

Viktor Gyokeres may have been the perfect striker for David Moyes at West Ham

Having reached the play-off final last season, it shouldn’t be a surprise that Gyokeres-less Coventry City are now sat 15th in the Championship.

The Swede was an outstanding player to have at that level, one who developed his game brilliantly at the club.

And it does now seem regrettable that West Ham let a deal slip away.

The club seemed to have some tension in their transfer department this summer, Tim Steidten not initially agreeing with Moyes on some targets.

And perhaps any possible deal for Gyokeres was lost in this period of inefficiency.

The club did end up having a brilliant window, one that softened the heavy blow of Declan Rice leaving.

However, West Ham failed to find a striker, which must have been a priority for David Moyes.

Of course, it may be possible that the club revisit a deal for Gyokeres, although it may be hard to stomach an inevitably increased asking price.
