‘It’s not working’… Pundit says £24m Arsenal player is ‘really unhappy’ and needs a loan move

Adrian Clarke has now shared his belief that Arsenal should look to loan out England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale in January.

The pundit was speaking on The Athletic’s ‘Handbrake Off’ Podcast and said a move away may now be needed to stop some negative noise.

Clarke thought that Ramsdale now looked very unhappy at Arsenal, and the situation was helping no one at the club.

He said: “I just think, what next for Ramsdale? For me, that’s the big question.

“I would be really tempted to actually call it quits here and say look it’s not working, we’re not driving up standards.

“We’ve got one really unhappy goalkeeper that we’re kind of ruining a little bit, it’s putting extra pressure on Raya too, maybe we let Rambo go either permanently or my preference for now would be just a loan move.

“Just to get him out there playing, to help get him into the Euros squad, we bring in someone else that’s decent enough as cover and that noise just goes.”

And whilst there’s merit to Clarke’s thoughts, it would create another tricky situation at the club.

David Raya arrived at Arsenal to install an elite-level of competition between himself and £24m Ramsdale.

Mikel Arteta didn’t want any players resting on their laurels in his squad, with everyone competing for a spot.

And should Ramsdale be allowed to leave Arsenal as Clarke suggests, Arteta may seek such a situation again.

Matt Turner was sold because he wasn’t pushing to become number one, and Arsenal may not suddenly settle for a backup option now.

It’s a delicate situation, and one that is bound to be often spoken about.

The idea of having two top goalkeepers at once club is often polarising among football fans, and Arsenal are the only top club in the Premier League with such levels of competition right now.

Pep Guardiola did it at Manchester City, and Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool to an extent.

However, when they both found their true number ones they were happy to install a genuine backup keeper, not someone pushing to be number one.

And perhaps Arteta could actually do the same if he envisions Raya as the permanent solution.

Of course, if Arsenal do free up some funds, they may pave the way for a quite astonishing signing next summer.
