Ian Wright shares what he’d rather have… Arsenal’s defence or Liverpool’s attack

Ian Wright has now suggested that Arsenal may have a slight edge over Liverpool in the title race this season.

Wright was speaking on ‘The Kelly and Wrighty Show’ and was asked whether he’d prefer to have Arsenal’s current defence or Liverpool’s attack.

It was suggested that Mikel Arteta’s side are stronger at the back, but Jurgen Klopp’s team do still enjoy more firepower.

And although he admitted his Arsenal bias, Wright was inclined to choose Arteta’s improving defence over Liverpool’s attack.

Wright said: “I’m very Arsenal centric, because we were built on defence, George Graham – so I’m always going to go with defence.

“What you can find is like what Arsenal did last year, they shared the goals out.

“Whereas if you get it wrong in defence, and you’re weak in defence, you lose games.

“Whereas you can have a solid defence and not have an out and out striker, or strikers as good as them guys who are scoring as frequently as those guys, and maybe win a 1-0.

“But the defence is so solid that you know if we scored I believed we were going to win the game, which is why my mind is always built on defence.”

Wright said he prioritises the defense when choosing between Arsenal and Liverpool

Of course, many Liverpool fans may feel hard done by in the suggestion that their defence is inferior.

Virgil van Dijk has been back to his best this season and Liverpool have conceded just 10 goals, the same amount as Arsenal.

Moreover, there also doesn’t seem to be a ton of difference in goals scored between the sides either, with Liverpool scoring just one more at 27 in the 12 games played.

Either way, it’s clear that Wright was choosing between very fine margins at Liverpool and Arsenal.

And Wright isn’t he only pundit who’s been comparing the two clubs recently.

Chris Sutton has also shared his belief that Mikel Arteta does still have a big issue with his strikers at hand.

Sutton thought that Liverpool were in a much stronger position with the likes of Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota.

Whereas, he feared that Arteta may struggle to compete with Gabriel Jesus and Eddie Nketiah this season.

It’s clear that we are in for a brilliant title race this year, with there being very little between four or five teams.

And with Liverpool facing Manchester City when club football returns, fans will get an exciting barometer of where this title race stands.
