‘Game changing’…Jamie Carragher names Sir Alex Ferguson’s ‘most influential’ signing at Manchester United

It’s safe to say the Sir Alex Ferguson era at Manchester United is still very much one of the most talked about spells in modern football.

Ferguson brought countless trophies to United and no manager has matched his success. Since his departure, the Red Devils just cannot get it right and the Scot has left a gaping hole in the entire club, not just the dugout.

Of course, Ferguson made some of the best signings in Manchester United’s history. Contrast to that now, with new expensive signings like Andre Onana and Antony struggling, and the difference is stark.

And writing for the Telegraph, Jamie Carragher has picked up on the poor form of Onana and insisted that above everyone, Peter Schmeichel remains United’s best ever signing.

Jamie Carragher says Peter Schmeichel is Ferguson’s best Manchester United signing

Writing in his column this week for the publication, Carragher insisted Schmeichel was the best Ferguson ever signed.

“I have long backed the argument that the most influential, game-changing signing that enabled Ferguson to win his first Premier League title was Peter Schmeichel. One of Schmeichel’s greatest United performances was at St James’ Park, where Ten Hag will lead his side on Saturday. His display in 1996 was critical to United winning the title ahead of Kevin Keegan’s entertainers,” Carragher said

Hard to argue with Carragher’s pick

When it comes to the best Manchester United signings of all time, it is hard to argue that Peter Schmeichel isn’t among the top five at least.

His impact at Old Trafford was enormous and as Carragher says, he had certain performances that led United to the title.

A top goalkeeper is key in any top side and right now, United looked to have made a major error when it comes to Onana. He is making mistakes consistently and it’s a huge surprise he’s not under more pressure in all honesty.

United have got to get this position sorted. They moved David de Gea on, who was more than reliable, and are now stuck with an expensive signing who looks nervy at best.
