‘You can’t defend him’: Jamie Carragher simply couldn’t believe what 24-year-old Liverpool player did vs Luton

Jamie Carragher almost ran out words when Darwin Nunez wasted a golden chance to give Liverpool the lead against Luton Town today.

Carragher was speaking during Sky Sports’ live coverage of the game and was astonished by Nunez’s miss in the 70th minute.

Although he may have been offside, Mohamed Salah headed the ball in Nunez’s direction only for the striker to blaze it over the bar.

And Carragher admitted that it does now become hard to defend Nunez’s misses for Liverpool despite his admiration for the player.

Carragher said: “There’s so much to like about this man, there is, but at times you can’t defend him.

“It’s a poor header from Salah actually, it’s a great opportunity for him…that’s unbelievable [the miss].”

And given the game was still 0-0 at the time, Nunez likely could have saved Liverpool from a frustrating draw at Kenilworth Road.

Despite being in control against a good Luton side throughout, Jurgen Klopp watched his side waste far too many chances.

And given his excellent movement, Nunez was on the end of most.

Of course, Liverpool will now have to quickly put this result behind them.

Klopp’s side will now travel to France in the Europa League on Thursday before they have a chance to put things right in the Premier League against Brentford.

And despite his misses, Nunez will still be determined to prove that he can be the main man for Klopp.

Carragher’s comments will probably summarise how a lot of Liverpool fans feel about Nunez right now.

A player with so much promise and potential, but one that lacks composure in front of goal.

The Uruguayan is almost hampered by his own tenacity at times, given he struggles to relax in front of goal.

But given there really is so much promise, Liverpool fans will surely still think they have an excellent player in their ranks.

And Jurgen Klopp is still the perfect manager to unlock that potential.
