Jamie Carragher says £75m Liverpool player was actually ‘excellent’ despite Luton draw

Jamie Carragher singled out Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk for praise as Jurgen Klopp’s men faced Luton Town today.

Carragher was on commentary for the game today on Sky Sports and was impressed with Van Dijk’s display.

The Reds were left frustrated at Kenilworth Road in the first half as they struggled to take their opportunities.

Darwin Nunez rattled the woodwork early in the half before Diogo Jota was denied by an excellent save. But Luton also posed a threat on the counter-attack throughout the game and Van Dijk was called into action on several occasions.

The 32-year-old cut out a few dangerous attacks from the Hatters in the second period and it led to praise from Carragher.

Carragher praises ‘excellent’ Van Dijk display

Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher highlighted Van Dijk’s display after the defender covered for Ibrahima Konate and snuffed out a Luton attack.

“He’s one of the few players for Liverpool today who’s been excellent, Virgil van Dijk,” he said.

Van Dijk endured a mixed campaign last time out but he’s been back to his best so far this season.

The £75 million defender has provided a commanding presence at the back and starred once again at Luton today.

But the Reds were left frustrated on Sunday evening as they struggled to make the most of their opportunities at Kenilworth Road.

Darwin Nunez missed an open goal in the 70th minute after the ball fell kindly to the Uruguayan following Mohamed Salah’s mishit effort.

Despite Van Dijk’s best efforts in defence, Liverpool were eventually hit on the break as Tahith Chong finished off an excellent counter-attack.

But the Dutchman was helpless to prevent the goal after he was attacking a corner for Liverpool just moments before the goal.

Luis Diaz came off the bench to rescue a point for Klopp’s men after what has been an emotional week for the Colombian.
