Son Heung-min has admitted that he has never been as nervous as when he needed to give a speech after Ange Postecoglou confirmed him as the new captain of Tottenham Hotspur in the summer.
Son was speaking to Men In Blazers about the boss’ decision to give him the armband as the club moved on from the likes of Hugo Lloris and Harry Kane.
Son Heung-min has been outstanding for Spurs. Son has stepped up as a striker following the sale of Harry Kane. The South Korean has scored eight goals in the opening 12 games of the Premier League season.

But he has also done brilliantly as the captain. Ange Postecoglou decided to make a change with Hugo Lloris given the green light to leave Tottenham in the summer.
However, it seems that Son was never expecting to be given the armband. The forward was asked about when he learned of the decision. And he suggested that he was given no prior warning before having to speak to the entire squad.
“To be honest, he never told me before,” he told Men In Blazers. “We had a meeting in the morning that day. And all the social media team were there in the meeting room. So I was like why are they here?
“And then suddenly he just announced the new captain is Sonny. I just had to give a speech. This was the most nervous time I ever had. And it was all the players. I always face them. Normally it should be easy, but in front of everybody, the speech was the hardest part for me.”

Son was arguably a fantastic choice for the captaincy. Few players seem to be as widely respected in the game as the 31-year-old.
Lloris was an excellent captain for Tottenham for a number of years. And he was certainly one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League for most of his time as number one.
However, Lloris struggled to find his best form in recent years. So the time was definitely right to make a change, both between the sticks and with the captaincy.
Guglielmo Vicario has proved to be an inspired signing in goal. And Son is most definitely doing a superb job of leading Tottenham in his new era for the club.
