‘I was surprised’… Chris Sutton was shocked at what Brendan Rodgers did when Celtic were drawing with Motherwell

Celtic’s draw with Motherwell has left the door open for Rangers to close the gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership should they beat Aberdeen today.

With Brendan Rodgers‘ side dropping another two points at home, the Celtic fans will undoubtedly be keeping a close eye on the result up at Pittodrie today.

Speaking before the Aberdeen lunchtime kick-off, Chris Sutton said he was left surprised at something Rodgers did yesterday when Celtic needed to score to get the win against The Steelmen.

Sutton said [Sky Sports], “I’ve got to say I don’t know if there was an injury yesterday or whatever. I was surprised he [Kyogo Furuhashi] got on the hook at the draw.

“When you need a goal, you keep your best player on the pitch. I know Oh has come on and made a bit of an impression but it’s about seeing it through, isn’t it?”

With the gap at the top of the table sitting at nine points, the decision to take off the Japanese international could be one that comes back to haunt Rodgers at the end of the season.

Should Rangers win their next two games in hand, Celtic’s lead will be slashed to just three points and with the next Glasgow Derby just on the horizon, both teams could be level at the top with Celtic just shading it in goal difference.

Obviously, there is a lot of football to be played before then but Celtic should not be dropping silly points at home when they have just been to every difficult away venue in Scotland and won. Including Ibrox.

No doubt yesterday’s draw will give Rangers that extra bit of incentive to go out and try and get all three points at Pittodrie today.

And if they do, unnecessary pressure is now on Celtic to win all of their remaining matches prior to the New Year Derby.
