‘Stood up to everything’…John Aldridge seriously impressed with two Liverpool players v Man City

Liverpool fought hard for a point at Manchester City at the weekend and John Aldridge has sung the praises of two Reds stars.

Jurgen Klopp’s side stayed in the game and then a goal from Trent Alexander-Arnold got them a big point at The Etihad. In the end, it was a deserved draw and a big result for Klopp’s side.

Much of the pre-game focus had been on if Liverpool’s new-look midfield could cope with the likes of Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Phil Foden.

In the end, Liverpool’s new signings did just that and writing for Sunday World, former Red John Aldridge was impressed.

John Aldridge impressed with Szoboszlai and Mac Allister against Manchester City

Speaking about the duo and how they stood up to City, Aldridge had the following take.

“Liverpool were struggling for midfield options for much of last season but Alexis Mac Allister and Dominik Szoboszlai stood up to everything City threw at them yesterday and held firm. Then Klopp could call on Gravenberch and Wataru Endo when he needed some fresh legs at the end and they did a job,” Aldridge said.

Proving a point

A lot of teams wilt under the pressure of City’s relentless pressure and a lot of the time that comes from the likes of Rodri controlling the game.

However, Liverpool did indeed manage to repel them and after so much talk of not having a proper holding midfielder on the pitch, Szoboszlai and Mac Allister did so well.

Yes, Liverpool might still need a new player in their long-term and interest in the likes of Cheick Doucoure has been mentioned.

However, Mac Allister – in particular – is doing well in the middle right now and he passed the biggest test possible this weekend.

Liverpool are well placed right now and those two midfielders more than proved their point this weekend.
