‘Immense’… Luton’s Andros Townsend raves about 24-year-old Liverpool star after playing against him

Luton Town forward Andros Townsend has singled out Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister for praise after playing against the midfielder recently.

The former Everton winger has been speaking on BBC Radio 5 Live and feels Liverpool’s new midfielders are difficult to play against.

Jurgen Klopp’s men were held to a 1-1 draw at Kenilworth Road the weekend before last as Luis Diaz netted a late equaliser.

The Hatters put in a brilliant display on the day and were just minutes away from securing a historic win.

Andros Townsend started off the right-hand side for Luton and nine days after the draw, he’s highlighted Alexis Mac Allister’s quality in midfield.

Townsend raves about Mac Allister

Speaking on the Monday Night Club, Townsend claimed that Liverpool boast different qualities in midfield after the departures of Jordan Henderson and Fabinho.

“Completely different,” the winger said. “Two years ago they had the two number sixes in Henderson and Fabinho who were sort of the workhorses in the side.

“They didn’t really get forward as much. They were prepared to sit back and wait for the counterattack and then cut out any counterattacks that happened and feed the ball back to the attacking players.

“Whereas now when the ball is at the feet of Gomez or Van Dijk or Konate, you have three midfielders who all have the quality to get on the ball and get turned and play forward.

“Mac Allister is the number six now and he has immense quality. It’s so tough. You can’t allow anyone to have the ball.

“You are constantly scanning. Jota looks to come inside. Salah roams and then Nunez runs in behind. It’s bombardment, you haven’t got a moment’s rest, you always have to be switched on.”

Mac Allister arrived at Anfield from Brighton early in the summer window and has largely been used as the No6 in Klopp’s side.

Many expected the 24-year-old to play in a more advanced role after he thrived in a similar position on the south coast.

While Mac Allister will be hoping to push further forward once Liverpool sign a quality defensive midfielder, he’s doing a decent job so far.

But you get the feeling the best is yet to come from the World Cup winner as he’s being used in a slightly unfamiliar role at the moment.
