Manchester United now want to sign £86m defender more than any other player next summer

Florian Plettenberg claims Manchester United have identified Benfica centre-back Antonio Silva as their ‘top target’ for next summer.

The Sky Sports journalist took to X on Monday evening and shared an update on Man United’s interest in the youngster.

Erik ten Hag looks set to dip into the market for a new centre-back over the coming transfer windows.

It’s no secret the Dutchman has struggled with options in the position this season, with Lisandro Martinez sidelined and Raphael Varane currently out of favour.

Antonio Silva has attracted interest from a host of top clubs after a real breakthrough season in Portugal last time out.

At the age of 20, he’s already earned seven caps for Portugal and looks set for a bright future in football.

Indeed, both Real Madrid and Liverpool have been linked but it seems that United are ready to make their move next summer.

United identify Silva as top target

Plettenberg took to social media on Monday night and claimed Silva is United’s ‘top target’ for next summer’s window.

He wrote: “The 20-year-old central defender from SL Benfica is the absolutely top target for Man Utd for summer 2024!

“Man United already keen on contract details and the plans of the top talent. €100m release clause next year!

“Benfica expect him to leave the club next summer. Contract until 2027.”

United are in desperate need of quality reinforcements at centre-back as Ten Hag has been forced to use several options in the position this season.

Indeed, Harry Maguire has recently come back into the side alongside Victor Lindelöf.

The duo have performed fairly well over the past few weeks, helping United to three consecutive wins in the Premier League.

But bringing in a talent like Silva would be a huge coup for Ten Hag.

The youngster boasts exceptional qualities on the ball and has the potential to develop into one of Europe’s top defenders.

United will undoubtedly face stiff competition for his signature should he leave Benfica next summer though.
