Gabriel Agbonlahor claims player Arsenal sold for £17m has become the best in the world

Gabriel Agbonlahor has claimed former Arsenal man Emiliano Martinez is currently the best goalkeeper in the world.

Speaking on talkSPORT this morning, the pundit lauded Martinez after a brilliant display against Arsenal’s North London rivals Tottenham on Sunday.

Mikel Arteta ultimately decided to offload Martinez back in September 2020.

Aston Villa snapped up the Argentine for just £17 million after he had impressed while covering for Bernd Leno in the 2019-20 campaign.

It’s fair to say that Martinez has excelled since leaving Arsenal.

The Argentine lifted the World Cup last year and has scooped the Yashin Trophy and the best men’s goalkeeper prize at the FIFA awards this year.

And Agbonlahor believes Martinez is the best goalkeeper in world football at the moment.

Speaking on talkSPORT, Agbonlahor lauded Martinez for the impact he’s made at Villa Park.

“I actually said a few weeks ago that he is the best goalkeeper in the world and everyone was like how? Him, him, him,” the former Villa striker said.

“But he’s won the World Cup, the form he had at the World Cup, the form he’s had since he joined Aston Villa. Not just in the last year, outstanding.

“There was a save he made yesterday from Hojbjerg, where some keepers let that in because they haven’t got the size of Martinez and he’s so good with his feet as well.”

The 31-year-old is undoubtedly among the best shot-stoppers in world football and his individual awards over the past year are proof of that.

He was exceptional in Qatar last year and was a key reason Argentina lifted the biggest prize in football.

But it’s a huge claim from Agbonlahor to label him the best in the world. The likes of Alisson Becker and Ederson have been so consistent over the past few years.

Yet, Arsenal must have some regrets about selling Martinez given his recent form.
