‘Best player on the park’… Aaron Lennon so impressed with one Tottenham man despite Aston Villa defeat

Aaron Lennon has singled out Rodrigo Bentancur for praise after his performance for Tottenham Hotspur today.

Rodrigo Bentancur was handed his first start of the season against Aston Villa after working his way back from an ACL injury.

The 26-year-old started at the base of the midfield, with Yves Bissouma suspended and Pape Matar Sarr injured.

Bentancur impressed in the early stages and helped Tottenham dominate in the middle of the park.

But his return to the starting XI was cut short after a late challenge from Matty Cash forced him off with an ankle injury in the first half.

Spurs eventually fell to a 2-1 defeat today after taking the lead through Giovani Lo Celso in the 22nd minute.

Tottenham were made to rue their missed chances on the day, with Son Heung-Min having three goals ruled out due to offside.

But Aaron Lennon was impressed with what he saw from Bentancur in the opening 30 minutes of the game.

Lennon lauds Bentancur during Tottenham vs Aston Villa clash

Lennon took to X during today’s game and singled out Bentancur for praise after he was forced off with an injury.

He wrote: “Hopefully not too serious. Been the best player on the park.”

It was bitterly disappointing for Spurs to see Bentancur limp off after such a bright start to the game.

The Uruguay international has worked exceptionally hard to get back to full fitness.

Postecoglou’s injury problems continue to worsen as he’s currently without key players such as Micky van de Ven, James Maddison, Richarlison and Pape Matar Sarr.

The Aussie boss will undoubtedly be hoping for some good news on Bentancur over the coming days.

Spurs face a stern test next Sunday as they travel to reigning champions Manchester City. But they will be boosted by the return of Bissouma.
