Pape Matar Sarr snubbed for award today, £30m Tottenham target a candidate to win it though

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pape Matar Sarr has now been snubbed for the African Young Player of the Year award.

The nominees for the award have now been announced, and Sarr must be considered unlucky to miss out.

However, a player who often looked like he may join Tottenham in the summer, Gift Orban, was included on the list.

Orban has enjoyed a pretty incredible scoring rate in Europe, and it is something of a surprise that he didn’t make a move in the summer.

Tottenham were heavily linked with a £30m deal for player who was tipped to soften the blow of Harry Kane leaving.

Of course, it transpired that Spurs already had the solution within their squad – Son Heung-Min.

The 31-year-old now looks reborn in a central role, and is scoring for fun under Ange Postecoglou.

Pape Matar Sarr has enjoyed a similar improvement under Ange at Tottenham, and should be considered very unfortunate not to be nominated for the award.

Sarr’s Tottenham form deserved a nomination for the award

21-year-old Sarr, who has 14 caps for Senegal, has now become a crucial part of this Spurs side.

And journalist Alasdair Gold did recently share just how surprised clubs across Europe were when Tottenham were able to secure the signing.

Alongside Yves Bissouma, Postecoglou has found a brilliant partnership that already existed within the club.

Rodrigo Bentancur may now be hoping to disrupt that pairing given his return to fitness.

However, it does seem that Postecoglou is even targeting further bodies in his midfield.

Tottenham have now been linked with a £30m move for Celtic’s Matt O’Riley in the near future.

So although Sarr may be disappointed not to be nominated for this award, his focus will surely be on his football at Tottenham.

Postecoglou’s squad is thin for now, but it seems he’s targeting much stronger competition for the future.
