Alasdair Gold has now been praising Pape Matar Sarr’s improvement at Tottenham Hotspur under Ange Postecoglou this season.
The journalist was speaking on the ‘Gold and Guest Talk Tottenham’ podcast and harped back to the deal that saw Sarr arrive at Tottenham.
Gold revealed that many clubs across Europe were shocked that Tottenham were able to sign Sarr from Metz at the time.
Of course, Spurs paid £15m to sign Sarr from Metz and then agreed to loan him back to the club, something that probably sweetened the deal.
Speaking on the matter, Gold said: “It just struck me that I don’t think people outside Spurs realise how good he is.
“I think he’s well respected on the continent, it was seen as a real coup that Spurs managed to get him in the first place from Metz.
“It’s almost like now, everyone’s drawn to the names and they’re ignoring the fact that this 21-year-old is running games at times from the midfield.

“I mean, he had more touches than any other midfielder on the pitch on Friday.”
Gold says Sarr’s Tottenham move was seen as a real coup across Europe
Of course, Sarr is now starring alongside Yves Bissouma in Postecoglou’s midfield.
The duo have been a key reason why Tottenham do still sit top of the league, and both have enjoyed remarkable improvements.
Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been unable to displace the duo, a task Rodrigo Bentancur will now try his hand at.
However, Tottenham have now been linked with a move for Postecoglou’s former player Matt O’Riley.
The Celtic midfielder is enjoying an excellent season, and may be intended to improve Spurs’ depth if the reports are to be believed.
Alan Shearer doesn’t think that this Tottenham side will win the league this season, and that may be owing to their small squad.
Gold has been quick to point out how important Sarr has become for Tottenham, and he would be a huge miss were he ever to miss out.
It’s only natural that Postecoglou has work to do on his squad, he’s only been around for one window.
But that must now be the next target for this budding Spurs project.
