‘Imagine me in that team’… Former England star now admits he wishes he’d signed for Arsenal

Micah Richards has now declared that he would choose to play for Arsenal under Arsene Wenger if he could turn back time.

Richards was asked which side he wishes he could have played for on ‘The Rest is Football’ podcast.

And the former Manchester City man was getting quite excited at the thought of playing for Arsenal around the Invincibles era.

Richards name-checked one or two familiar Arsenal names, saying he’d had loved to play for Wenger at Highbury.

He said: “The Arsenal. Imagine playing under Wenger at Highbury with Thierry Henry and Bergkamp, Vieira, Ashely Cole, Pires, Tony Adams, Seaman.

“Imagine me in that team, I would have flourished!”

Of course, many Arsenal players today must surely wish they could turn back time for a few appearances in that side as well.

The question is often asked of which Arsenal players today would be capable of playing in such a team, and the answer is always the same: Bukayo Saka.

And although Richards was pining over Wenger’s side of yesteryear, he would surely enjoy playing behind Saka on Arsenal’s right as well.

Of course, Richards has also been full of praise for the current Arsenal manager of late.

Along with Gary Lineker, Micah Richards was very impressed with how Mikel Arteta conducted himself after Arsenal’s win against Burnley.

After a dramatic spat with VAR and the officiating at Newcastle United the week before, Arteta chose to heavily praise those bodies on this occasion.

Perhaps it was an admission that Arteta had previously gone too far, at least that’s what Gary Lineker thought.

Either way, it is certainly nice to harp back to the days of such brilliant teams under Arsene Wenger.

And the challenge for this Arsenal team today will now be to reach those levels.

William Saliba and Declan Rice do appear to be two generational talents, players capable of winning trophies in any team.

And Arteta will now need to harness all of his talent in long season to come.
