Paul Merson says 26-year-old Arsenal star would play so well alongside Ivan Toney

Arsenal legend Paul Merson has described Gabriel Jesus as a “dream to play with”.

Speaking on Sky Sports, the Gunners icon said he feels Jesus would play so well alongside “an Ivan Toney”.

The Arsenal striker, recently back from a hamstring injury, was back to his best against Lens in midweek.

Jesus created the opening goal for Kai Havertz with a deft header to knock the ball into the German’s path.

The 26-year-old then got on the scoresheet himself with a wonderfully composed effort, making a mockery of his markers on the way.

Even prior to his goal contributions, Jesus was playing well, prompting Merson to praise the Arsenal man’s qualities.

“I think Jesus is a dream to play with,” he said on Soccer Special, via the Sky Sports website.

“If you’re an Ivan Toney you’d love to play with him. He’s a team player but he won’t get you the goals to win the Premier League on his own.”

Ivan Toney a great shout for Arsenal but January move unlikely – TBR View

Arsenal have been linked with Toney over the past few months.

For instance, The Evening Standard reported in November that the Gunners are frontrunners for the Brentford ace, alongside Chelsea.

As perfect as Arsenal were on Wednesday night, there’s still a feeling that the proverbial jigsaw still has a couple of missing pieces.

For instance, there have been games where they’ve not been putting teams to bed as you’d expect from a team of the Gunners’ calibre and ambitions.

This is where Toney could fit in. He would be a focal point for Arsenal, a clinical finisher to convert a bigger percentage of the many chances the Gunners create.

At the same time, it doesn’t look like the Bees are looking to sell up any time soon. Indeed, Sky Sports reported that they still value him at £100million.

Toney to Arsenal very much looks like a close-season sort of signing, so while the speculation will no doubt continue ahead of and during January, it doesn’t look that likely.
