TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher has shared what he noticed Peter Schmeichel do when Andre Onana made his second mistake of the evening in Manchester United’s Champions League tie with Galatasaray on Wednesday.
Fletcher was speaking (broadcast on 29/11; 19:15) after the goalkeeper somehow allowed Hakim Ziyech’s free-kick past him during the second-half.
Andre Onana certainly would not have silenced any of his critics in Turkey. The Cameroonian has had a mixed time since moving to Old Trafford in the summer. Unfortunately, he made two massive mistakes during their crucial tie with Gala.
How Peter Schmeichel reacted to Andre Onana mistake
Ziyech handed the home side a lifeline during the first-half after scoring from a free-kick after United had taken a 2-0 lead. Certainly, there was no way that Onana should have allowed the ball to get past him.
But things got even worse in the second-half after the visitors restored their two-goal lead. Once again, Ziyech took a free-kick that would have initially looked fairly harmless.
The former Chelsea star looked to curl the ball in towards the danger zone. However, it looked set to go all the way through to Onana who was seemingly about to be tasked with a fairly simple save.
But Onana somehow parried the ball into his own net as he attempted to punch it clear. And what made the mistake even worse was that Galatasaray would score an equaliser shortly after.

Understandably, the TNT Sports commentary team were left in disbelief by the mistake. And they were not the only ones as they spotted how Peter Schmeichel reacted to Ohana’s error.
“The goalkeeper, I think it has bounced just in front of him and he’s tried to push it up but that’s terrible goalkeeping. Two errors for me. Is he anticipating a touch off his own player?” Robbie Savage said.
“Wow. Just when you thought United were looking a bit composed a mistake like that,” Rio Ferdinand responded.
“Peter Schmeichel just sat along from us has just put his head in his hands, Robbie,” Darren Fletcher added.
Error proves hugely costly for Manchester United
The mistake was extremely costly. Manchester United looked set to secure a really important win that would have taken them second in the group and boosted their hopes of going through.
But the goal gave Galatasaray the lift they needed. And the equaliser came shortly after.
Onana has hardly been the most convincing signing since arriving in the summer. And if he does not go on and prove to be a success at Old Trafford, his performance tonight will be remembered for a very, very long time.
