Paul Ince shares his honest thoughts on Bruno Fernandes as captain of Manchester United

Manchester United might have won at Everton this weekend but Paul Ince is not impressed by their skipper, Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes was involved in much of the play at Everton and looked to play one of his better games this season in the main.

However, he has not been at it like he once was and he’s come in for criticism from pundits for his body language at times as well as insistence on arguing with referees and fellow players.

And former United skipper Ince admitted he’d not like the Portuguese to be his captain.

Paul Ince not impressed with Bruno Fernandes

Speaking about Ince on TalkSPORT today, Ince admitted he’d not be too happy about having Fernandes as his captain.

“No I don’t think [he’d like Fernandes to be his captain]. Listen, captains are completely different nowadays when you talk about the Bryan Robsons and Roy Keanes of this world. Proper leaders. Beckham was a leader by the way he played, he wasn’t very talkative,” Ince said.

“I don’t know what I see in Fernandes in as is he a leader by the way he plays. I feel at the moment he’s not playing to the best of his ability. As a leader, you do it by organisation. My main thing as a captain was if I’m not playing well, make sure the people around you are playing well. It shows how bad you’re playing. That’s your purpose as a captain, look around you and get others playing well. I look at Fernandes and it’s all about him and I think if he’s not playing well, then, you can see it in his body language.”

Times have changed at United and everywhere

Ince makes the point about how things have altered a bit and he is right in that sense.

With Bruno Fernandes, it is easy to see why he gets critics and at times he does come across as a bit of a baby on the pitch.

However, that could be down to him just wanting to win and having a strong desire to not be outdone and beaten while playing for such a huge club.

Nobody can question Fernandes in terms of his ability. But as Ince says, there is often a lot to be unimpressed by when you look at his leadership from afar.
