‘Surprised’… Gary Lineker and Micah Richards both shocked Manchester United sold £15m player last summer

Manchester United have brought in and sold a lot of players over the last few years, including winger Anthony Elanga in the summer.

United let Elanga go to Nottingham Forest for around £15m. Despite looking sharp in the few chances he had at Old Trafford, Erik ten Hag was more than happy to let him go.

Since then, Elanga has very much impressed at the City Ground and looks to be one of the key players in an attacking sense for Steve Cooper’s side.

And speaking about United and Elanga on The Rest is Football podcast, both Micah Richards and Gary Lineker admitted their surprise at seeing the Swedish winger leave United.

Lineker and Richards surprised at Anthony Elanga call

Going back and forth on the podcast about Elanga, Richards and Lineker had the following to say.

“Elanga coming to the club, somewhere he was surplus to requirements,” Richards said.

“I quite liked him at Manchester United, I thought he had something. I just thought he had something about him. I was surprised they let him go actually,” Lineker added.

“I was surprised as well. He has scored a couple and played really well. Some good celebrations as well!,” Richards finished.

£15m looks a bargain

Looking at this transfer and how well Elanga has done at Forest, it looks like two things have happened here.

One, is that United have perhaps let Elanga go when they perhaps could have done with him this season.

Secondly, it’s clear Forest have signed themselves a bargain by paying just £15m for an international winger with so many attributes.

Elanga has looked excellent at times for Forest and has a number of big pluses in terms of his output and potential. His pace is frightening and under Steve Cooper, he has a real chance to develop.

United will definitely look back at this one you feel and have a bit of regret. You very much get the impression that in years to come, Elanga will end up being a top Premier League player.
