Gary Neville says £67m Liverpool player will ‘be grateful’ after Manchester City draw

Sky Sports pundit Gary Neville says Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker will be “grateful” in wake of a disallowed Manchester City goal in Saturday’s Premier League draw at the Etihad.

In the 68th minute of the match, the Reds goalkeeper fumbled the ball under pressure from Manuel Akanji, who made contact with the stopper.

Ruben Dias was on hand to tap the ball in at the back post, but the referee was quick to rule the goal out, with VAR subsequently confirming it.

The decision to rule the City goal out split opinion among fans. Some felt it was indeed a foul, while others felt Alisson had made the mistake.

Neville, speaking on Sky Sports, hinted that he felt it was the right decision, saying he thought the £67million man had “made a mess of it” in “real time”.

However, the Manchester United legend also said it was a “soft” decision and believes Alisson will be “grateful” for how the officiating decision went.

“In real time, l thought Alisson made a mess of it. There’s a little bit of a right arm…” he said. “It’s a soft one and Alisson will be grateful.”

Difficult day for Alisson Becker despite Liverpool drawing 1-1 at Man City

Alisson is normally a consistently world-class goalkeeper, but even the very best have the occasional poor display in them.

The 31-year-old wasn’t at his best at the Etihad, but despite this, Liverpool can return to Anfield with a point, so things have worked out pretty well.

At the same time, Jurgen Klopp confirmed that Alisson “felt something” during the game, so let’s hope it’s not serious.

Klopp told his post-match press conference, via the Liverpool website: “The shadow on this game is obviously that Ali felt something and Diogo felt something.

“Something we have to assess and then we will see.

Expanding further on Alisson’s fitness, he added: “I hope it’s not that serious, but I don’t have the answer – no clue in the moment what it is.

“I spoke to him and he said he only felt [it] a little bit, but we have to wait for the scan.”
