Scottish Rooney and nine-goal gem: Three Liverpool academy stars who could enjoy breakthrough in 2023

Liverpool have a proud history of nurturing players through their own youth academy and 2023 is unlikely to be any different.

The Reds have a number of players emerging through their academy and the future looks very bright indeed.

With a new year upon us, we looked at three Liverpool players who could make an impact on the first team during 2023.

Ben Doak

He’s been billed as a player who is similar to Wayne Rooney by his agent and this looks like a great piece of business by Liverpool.

Doak signed for the club from Celtic, with the Anfield giants parting with just £600,000 to sign him.

He’s already made his senior debut as a substitute in the Carabao Cup against Derby County.

The 17-year-old has also been on the bench in the Premier League and Jurgen Klopp clearly fancies him.

Doak looks like a star in waiting and has eight goals or assists in the UEFA Youth League during 2022/23.

As a tricky winger, he could be brilliant in Klopp’s system and as a result, 2023 could be his breakthrough year.

Stefan Bajcetic

The 18-year-old arrived at Liverpool from Celta Vigo in 2021 and does have a 21-minute appearance to his name in the Premier League.

That came during the 9-0 win over Bournemouth and he’s been pretty frequently in the matchday squad.

The next step for the youngster is to force his way into the first-team reckoning on a more regular basis.

Bajcetic is a right-back and that means he will constantly be competing with Trent Alexander-Arnold.

With Calvin Ramsey being signed in the summer, things won’t come easily but he’s a player with bags of talent.

Oakley Cannonier

This would be a wildcard option but this Liverpool gem is definitely someone who knows where the back of the net is.

Cannonier has found the net nine times during 2022/23 for the under-21s and the future for him looks bright.

Liverpool are unlikely to be looking at a new centre forward any time soon and if needs must they could promote within.

Injuries or suspensions could see Cannonier make the step up and he’d be desperate to grasp any opportunity that comes his way.

The year 2023 could be a little bit too soon for Cannonier but it would be a popular decision if he did breakthrough.
