Pundit believes ‘brilliant’ player has no future at Tottenham after this weekend

Robbie Earle and Robbie Mustoe believe that Eric Dier now has no future at Tottenham Hotspur after the decision Ange Postecoglou made at the weekend.

The pundits were speaking on The 2 Robbies after the 29-year-old was left on the bench for the defeat to Aston Villa despite Spurs’ problems naming a team right now.

Eric Dier was one of the players who looked set to have an opportunity in the coming weeks. Cristian Romero is serving a suspension right now. Meanwhile, Micky van de Ven is sidelined with injury.

Eric Dier may now be done at Tottenham

Dier did come on against Chelsea. And he made his first league start of the season against Wolves before the international break. However, he was left on the bench against Villa, with Emerson Royal and Ben Davies starting at centre-back instead.

And following Ange Postecoglou‘s decision, both Robbie Earle and Robbie Mustoe believe that Dier’s days at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium are now numbered.

“When you’re missing your main centre-backs and then Eric Dier doesn’t get in the team, it just shows that he has no future at the club,” Earle said on The 2 Robbies.

“He doesn’t, because he’s not very quick. Good player, England international, brilliant career. But with this system, he needs somebody quick back there. And I thought Emerson Royal, to be fair, did a good job,” Mustoe replied.

Defender has become a last resort

The situation definitely appears to be bleak for Eric Dier. Postecoglou made just three substitutions during Sunday’s game.

Dier was one of five players to remain on the bench. The other four were made up of two goalkeepers and two 18-year-olds. So it was not at all surprising that they were not called upon.

It is strange in some ways. The fact that Dier is in the squad hints that he is not being completely frozen out. But it does feel as though he has potentially become a last resort.

That is a shame. But as Mustoe notes, Tottenham are heading in a different direction – and it is one that the fans are loving.

So it may be best for all sides if a move away is agreed, whether that comes in January or the summer.
