Cody Gakpo has almost been at Liverpool for a year now, and he’s had something of a mixed time of it at Anfield thus far.
The Dutchman has been utterly brilliant at times, but he’s struggled to really nail down a place in the team, being shifted into midfield at times as Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota jostle for an attacking start.
Speaking on the Aldo Meets Podcast, Dirk Kuyt has been discussing his fellow countryman, and he reckons that Gakpo is more than capable of being a 20-goal-a-season player for Liverpool at some point if he’s given the necessary gametime.
Gakpo can score 20 a season
Kuyt gave his verdict on the attacker.
“Do you think he can get 20 goals in a season?” Kuyt was asked.
“I think in the future he can do so. He arrived at a difficult time, it’s never easy to join a club in a winter break. Not many players can get into a team so quickly. Liverpool had some injuries when he came and Jurgen had to put him straight into the team,” Kuyt said.
“Last season, Gakpo showed some quality moments with some great goals. People said they still expected more from him, people forget he’s still at a young age, but once he finds his position in the team, and he’s playing 30/35 games, I think he can be a 20+ goalscorer.”
Massive potential
Kuyt says that Gakpo has the potential to be a 20-goal-a-season striker, and we’re inclined to agree.
MORE LIVERPOOL STORIES
The Dutchman is still only settling at Anfield, and he’s already fairly prolific – netting seven in 21 last season for the Reds.
Before that, he was really in his stride for PSV, netting nine in 14 in half a season, and once he gets up to that sort of form in England, he could easily start banging in the goals at the rate of a world-class forward.
Liverpool have some incredible attackers on their books right now, and Gakpo is certainly a player to be excited about.
