Tottenham could now stop ‘outstanding’ in-demand player from leaving in January

Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg has been linked with a move away from Spurs for a number of months now.

However, The Telegraph has claimed that Tottenham may now keep hold of the Denmark international in wake of yet more bad injury news.

Rodrigo Bentancur is now expected to be out of action until February after tearing a ligament in his ankle in Spurs’ last game.

The 26-year-old was replaced in the first half of the 2-1 defeat by Aston Villa after a foul by Matty Cash.

Bentancur, who was making his first Spurs start since rupturing his anterior cruciate ligament in February, now faces yet more time on the sidelines.

In addition, Yves Bissouma and Pape Matar Sarr are set to take part in the Africa Cup of Nations, which takes place from January 13 to February 11.

With all this in mind, The Telegraph reports that Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham may reject any offers for both Hojbjerg and Oliver Skipp.

Tottenham midfielder Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg ‘wants to be playing regularly’

Earlier this month, journalist Paul Brown told GiveMeSport that Hojbjerg has “made his mind up” regarding his future.

“He was told that he could leave if the right deal came along in the last window and I think that probably made his mind up,” wrote Brown.

“He’s in the team now because of injuries, but it doesn’t look like he’s going to stay there for very long and I think he knows it.

“At this stage of his career, he wants to be playing regularly and there are some pretty big clubs looking at him who’d be able to give him more game time than Spurs.”

It’ll be interesting to see what happens in the coming weeks. With games coming in thick and fast, the  ‘absolutely outstanding‘ Hojbjerg may just get some more opportunities.

And then, when Bissouma and Sarr leave for the Africa Cup of Nations, Hojbjerg is pretty much guaranteed to get regular starts. Could that change his mind about Spurs?

One thing’s for sure though. Tottenham are in the midst of an injury crisis at present and it would be illogical to let Hojbjerg leave when their midfield ranks are so depleted.
