National media claim country got worse after £15m Tottenham player was subbed on yesterday

The Danish media have criticised Tottenham Hotspur’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg after his cameo display against Northern Ireland last night.

Denmark fell to a surprise 2-0 defeat as Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg dropped to the bench.

Hojbjerg has been a regular for Denmark over the past couple of years but Kasper Hjulmand opted to make some changes in the middle of the park.

Celtic star and reported Tottenham target Matt O’Riley made his debut in midfield, while Mathis Jensen also got the nod.

The Danes opted to make some changes around the hour mark as they trailed 1-0, with Hojbjerg replacing Jensen in the 61st minute.

And Danish outlet Ekstra Bladet claimed that Denmark actually got worse after the Tottenham star’s introduction as they went on to concede another goal.

Danish media unimpressed by Hojbjerg’s latest international display

The outlet handed Hojbjerg a two out of five-star rating for his cameo display last night.

They claim the Spurs star delivered plenty of energy but he was part of the trio introduced into the game who failed to turn things around, with Denmark actually getting worse after the subs.

“Immediately delivered a lot of energy, but that was also it for Hojbjerg, who was part of a substitute trio that should have lifted the Danish game, but ended up doing the opposite,” Ekstra Bladet wrote.

Hojbjerg is set to enjoy a run in the Tottenham side following an injury to James Maddison.

The 28-year-old started from the off against Wolves and looks likely to continue in midfield following Yves Bissouma’s suspension.

It’s fair to say the Dane isn’t exactly well-suited to Ange Postecoglou’s style of play. But it’s a surprise to see him struggle for Denmark this week.

The £15 million man is normally a consistent performer for his country but was unable to make an impact from the bench last night.
