Leeds United are now discussing selling Charlie Cresswell, who is currently on loan at Millwall, this month.
The Athletic report that Leeds have a serious interest in Diogo Monteiro, a teenage defender who turns 18 next week.
At that point, Leeds can formalise an offer and they will seemingly hope to bring him in before the end of the January window.
That apparently means that Cresswell could leave the club on a permanent basis, and talks are already underway to discuss that.
Leeds could sell Cresswell
The report says that at least one Championship club wants to buy Cresswell on the back of his performances with Millwall.
That shows how quickly things can change for players coming through the ranks, and it seems that even Cresswell’s displays in the second tier may not be enough to spare him a permanent Leeds departure.
Leeds have been spending a lot of time and energy on their youth setup in recent years, and getting Monteiro would be a continuation of that.
Would letting an academy graduate like Cresswell go in the process be worthwhile or popular? That would be up for debate.
Millwall manager Gary Rowett has described Cresswell as ‘excellent‘ during his time at the club and if the defender realises anything like his full potential, he will get to the level to play regularly for Leeds.
So it would be a bit of a risk to sell Cresswell, although we seem to be a bit of a while off that stage yet, it is being discussed and not ruled out.
