‘Selection decision’: 20-year-old seen as ‘the future’ at Leeds United has now dropped by manager while out on loan

Leeds United defender Charlie Cresswell has been dropped by Millwall manager Gary Rowett.

Rowett was speaking to Southwark News after Millwall’s 1-1 draw with Rotherham United last night.

Cresswell joined Championship side Millwall on a season-long loan in the summer.

It was the first loan move of his career after making his Premier League debut last season.

Cresswell had been involved in every matchday squad this season for Millwall before yesterday’s snub.

He scored a brace on his debut for the Lions, much to the delight of his Leeds teammates.

Since then, a report in The Athletic has suggested that Leeds see him as ‘the future’ of the club.

However, Cresswell will be hoping to break back into the Millwall team quickly after being dropped yesterday.

Cresswell dropped at Millwall

Speaking after Millwall’s match yesterday, Rowett was asked about dropping Cresswell, saying: “It was just a selection decision.

“We played with a back four. I felt I needed to go with a four that had played a lot together so that’s what I decided to do.

“It was just a decision I made, I didn’t feel I needed a centre back on the bench.

“I think sometimes people will feel if you’re not in the 18 then something has gone wrong, but you have to remember that the bench needs to be able to impact the game so you have to pick the bench accordingly.”

Cresswell shouldn’t be too concerned about not being included in the squad last night.

Millwall captain Shaun Hutchinson was left out of the squad at the weekend before returning yesterday.

The England under-21 international is a fantastic prospect, and will be pushing to be part of Jesse Marsch’s first-team squad next season.

Another Leeds man is also at The Den with Cresswell, midfielder Jamie Shackleton.

Shackleton has been a mainstay in Rowett’s side, but his time at Elland Road is probably over.

Cresswell will be hoping he’s not dropped again at the weekend and can return to the Millwall starting line-up.
