‘Heading towards that’… Tottenham could terminate £120k-a-week player’s contract

Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is “heading towards that point” where his contract may be terminated by Spurs, according to Dean Jones.

The journalist, writing on GiveMeSport, reckons that it’s “the right thing to do” because it’s “pointless” keeping him around at Tottenham.

Lloris’ stock at Tottenham has fallen dramatically between the end of last season and the present day.

The £120,000-a-week goalkeeper (Salarysport) was very much in the Harry Kane bracket of being a bona fide Spurs legend.

He was Tottenham’s captain and a stalwart who had spent over a decade with the club and had clocked up 444 competitive appearances.

However, in the summer, Lloris decided he wanted a move away from Tottenham and declared “an end of an era” for him at Spurs.

He was frozen out at Tottenham with the expectation that he would seal a move away in the summer. However, this didn’t happen, and he’s now still at Spurs, albeit not playing.

‘I imagine we’re heading towards that moment’

Lloris’ Tottenham contract runs out at the end of the season, and Jones reckons Spurs could just terminate it and end this limbo for everybody.

That said, Jones acknowledges that this is easier said than done as discussions may go on for some time as both parties sit down to arrange the potential pay-off.

“Lloris is heading towards that point where you wonder if they will just terminate his contract,” he said. “How easy that is, who knows?

“Obviously, paying someone out of a contract is not something you see that often in football, and that’s for good reason because of the finances involved and the complications that come with it.

“But, for everybody’s sake, this seems pointless and seems like the right thing to do in this moment. I’d imagine we’re heading towards that moment.”

You can’t help but wonder what Lloris was thinking when he decided to call time at Tottenham without having anything else concretely arranged beforehand.

Now, we’ve got this situation where one of the club’s legends, the former captain with over a decade’s service for Spurs, is a forgotten man at N17, having failed to seal a move away in the summer.

When Lloris does leave Tottenham, fans will surely remember his time at Spurs fondly, but this is just such an ignominious situation at present.

Terminating his contract would no doubt be the best option for all parties. Draw a line under this and then give him the send-off his career deserves further down the line.
