‘What a goal’: Paul Merson stunned by player Arsenal sold to PL rivals for £3m, keeper had ‘no chance’

Just over two years ago, Arsenal sold Sam Greenwood to Leeds United for a fee reportedly rising to £3million.

The 20-year-old joined the Gunners academy from Sunderland in the summer of 2018.

Greenwood did well at Under-18s level for Arsenal, bagging 15 goals and six assists from 39 outings.

He also featured seven times for the Under-23s, scoring once.

However, Greenwood opted to leave in 2020, joining the Elland Road outfit.

The forward has gone from strength to strength at Leeds, and is now in the first-team squad.

On Saturday, Greenwood scored his first competitive goal for Jesse Marsch’s side, against Bournemouth.

And what a goal it was.

The ball fell to the former Arsenal ace outside the box after Pascal Struijk saw an effort blocked.

Greenwood sized up a shot and nonchalantly curled home from a good 20 yards out.

Arsenal legend and Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson, speaking on Soccer Saturday, loved what he saw.

“What a goal it is from the substitute Greenwood, who’s come on,” he said, as per Sky Sports Premier League Twitter.

“They put a bit of pressure on, ball gets blocked, comes out to (Greenwood) on the right-hand side of the box.

“First-time, left-footed, bends it into the far corner, gives the goalkeeper no chance, and it is game on.”

As reported by Leeds Live at the time, quite a few Arsenal fans despaired after Greenwood left them.

Some even drew comparisons between Greenwood’s departure and Serge Gnabry’s 2016 exit.

Based on what happened at Elland Road today, it looks as though there may be more Arsenal fans now thinking it wasn’t a good decision.

But the Gunners’ loss is Leeds’ gain – they’ve got an amazing talent on their hands.
