‘Suits me’: Leeds attacker admits Marsch’s tactics are much better for him than Bielsa’s were

Leeds forward Sam Greenwood has said that new manager Jesse Marsch’s tactics are better suited to his game than Marcelo Bielsa’s were.

Bielsa famously insisted on a man marking system, which could often see his players dragged all over the pitch, especially against the best sides.

Marsch uses a more conventional zonal approach, where players are not as wedded to their men, and Greenwood told the official Leeds United podcast that suits him better.

“I think I suit this style of play a bit more to be honest,” said Greenwood.

“With Bielsa it was man to man but with this style you don’t have to stay with the man, basically you can stay in between two men and if it goes to the left side you can all go as a team.

“Instead of focusing on one guy so much you can jump to a different man and that suits me to a tee basically. I love showing pressing and aggression off the ball.”

Plenty was said about how Bielsa’s tactics elevated so many of Leeds’ players to a level they would probably not have reached otherwise.

That is true, but it is interesting to hear it from the other side, a talented young player who can now develop under a different manager, without a unique tactical system to deal with.

Bielsa has a reputation for developing young players and kept Leeds’ squad thin in order to give them a chance to play when there are injuries.

But Marsch is doing it his own way and it will be interesting to see the likes of Greenwood develop under his tutilage.
