Sam Greenwood threatening to make Arsenal rue £3m sale to Leeds

While Alexandre Lacazette comes in for criticism for his current form, one striker Arsenal sold for just £3 million before he made his Gunners debut is starting to make a real impact in the Premier League.

Sam Greenwood has had to bide his time at Leeds United. He has been a regular fixture for the under-23s since arriving at Elland Road. And he had been outstanding for the youngsters, particularly when paired with Joe Gelhardt.

But it did appear that he may not be someone who makes the grade under Marcelo Bielsa. His only Premier League appearance under Bielsa came against Arsenal in December when he came on in the 4-1 loss. At that stage, the Leeds squad had been absolutely decimated by injuries.

But Greenwood is one player who appears to have benefitted from the change of manager at Elland Road.

Jesse Marsch has named him on the bench for every single game he has taken charge of so far. And he has now got on in the wins against Wolves and Watford.

Greenwood is still awaiting that first top-flight goal. But there is absolutely no question that he has made a big impression on the Leeds boss.

In both games, he has provided an assist. And he also played an important role in the vital second goal for Leeds on Saturday as they beat Watford 3-0.

After the game, Marsch stated that Greenwood has taken to his ideas better than anyone in the Leeds squad. He also insisted that the 20-year-old is going to be a ‘big player‘ for him.

And that may perhaps leave some at Arsenal wondering if they made an error selling him.

Will selling Sam Greenwood prove to be a mistake from Arsenal?

Of course, Leeds are in a different fight to Arsenal. And Greenwood is yet to score. But he is certainly making an impact.

Leeds have actually looked more dangerous when Greenwood has led the line instead of Dan James. And he now has as many assists as Emile Smith Rowe this season. Martin Odegaard only has one more.

Greenwood however, has been on the pitch for 102 minutes in this campaign. Lacazette meanwhile, has not had a goal involvement since the first of the Leeds man’s two assists.

It would have been asking a lot to expect the forward to contribute for Arsenal this season. But he is certainly showing that he could definitely have a bright future at the highest level ahead.
