£200,000-a-week striker has doubts over joining Newcastle United now

Newcastle United are interested in Romelu Lukaku, who is on loan at AS Roma from Chelsea at the moment.

That is according to Voetbalkrant, which has noted how Lukaku feels about a potential move to Newcastle.

So, what has been reported about Newcastle United and Romelu Lukaku? Let’s take a look.

Romelu Lukaku stance on potential Newcastle United transfer

Well, according to Voetbalkrant, Newcastle United are interested in signing Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea.

Lukaku is on loan at AS Roma from Chelsea at the moment. The Belgium international striker joined the Italian club on a loan deal in the summer of 2023 and is scheduled to stay at the Serie A outfit until the end of the season.

Voetbalkrant has reported that Newcastle see Lukaku as “ideal” to lead their attack. However, the £200,000-a-week (SalarySport) striker himself has “doubts”. The Belgian has already played in the Premier League. Callum Wilson rates him highly.

The report has noted that AS Roma are not financially strong enough to pay the €38 million (£32.71 million) that Chelsea want from them to sell Lukaku on a permanent deal. Tottenham were linked with Lukaku in the summer of 2023.

Newcastle United should aim for a better striker

In my opinion, Newcastle United should not try to sign Romelu Lukaku from Chelsea. Yes, we know that he is very good, but he is past his prime and has not done well in recent times in the Premier League.

Chelsea decided to send Lukaku out on loan to Roma because he failed to make a huge impact in his second spell at the London club. He is 30 now.

I believe that if Newcastle are keen on signing a striker in the summer of 2024, then they should aim for someone who is younger, perhaps in their mid-20s.

Of course, if Newcastle can sign a world-class striker who is 29 or 30, then, yes, go for it, but Lukuku is not in that bracket.
