The real reason why Hugo Lloris rejected Newcastle this summer

Hugo Lloris is in a strange situation at Tottenham right now.

The Frenchman remains one of Spurs’ most high-profile and highest-paid players, but, for all intents and purposes, he’s not a part of their squad.

He’s not even featured on the bench so far this season, and he didn’t go on Spurs’ pre-season tour as he looked to find a new club in the summer.

Lloris spent the whole summer looking for a new club, but, as of yet, he’s been unable to secure his next move.

Lloris was the subject of a number of offers in the summer, but the Frenchman decided that none of these clubs were right for him.

The World Cup winner actually received an offer to join Newcastle United on deadline day in the summer, but, the goalkeeper decided to reject a move to St James’ Park.

The Sun have now shared why Lloris decided not to move to The Toon, and according to their report, Lloris didn’t join Newcastle because he wanted to be the first-choice wherever he ended up.

In all fairness, we can understand this point of view from Lloris.

The 36-year-old probably doesn’t have that long left in the game, so he has every right to want to enjoy playing while he still can.

While Newcastle do have an exciting project brewing, Lloris knew that he wasn’t going to displace Nick Pope as their number one, so he was best off waiting for another opportunity to crop up.

Of course, at the moment. Lloris is in limbo, but with the January window around the corner, opportunity could soon come knocking for the Tottenham man.

Where Lloris ends up remains to be seen, but it would appear he’s only going to entertain the notion of joining a club where he’s guaranteed first-team football.
