‘One of the secret players’… Fabrizio Romano says Tottenham quietly tried to sign ‘very talented’ player

Giorgio Scalvini has just been crowned the best young player in Italy, and the future looks bright for the defender.

The Italian has been brilliant for Atalanta over the past 18 months or so, and at the age of just 19, he’s already making real waves in Serie A.

As with any young player coming through at a club like this, Scalvini has been linked to a number of top European clubs, and according to Fabrizio Romano, speaking on Kick, Tottenham quietly tried to sign the teenager in the summer, but they were put off the youngster due to Atalanta’s huge asking price.

Spurs tried for Scalvini

Romano shared what he knows about the youngster.

“We have the best Italian player U21 wining the award right now. This is Giorgio Scalvini. The centre-back of Atalanta, a very talented player, we know him very well in Italy, not as known in Europe, but he is very good.

“He’s on the radar of many clubs, for example, I heard, last summer, Tottenham were considering a move, he was one of the secret players that they had in the list at Tottenham, but they decided to go for something different because Atalanta were asking crazy money for Scalvini.”

One to watch

Tottenham may have failed to sign Scalvini at this juncture, but he remains a player to watch for Spurs.

Tottenham could get a huge cash injection if they qualify for the Champions League this season, and it’s clear that Scalvini is still a player they like.

Spurs still need to add depth at centre-half in order to flesh out their squad, and signing a young player like Scalvini could be just what the doctor ordered in north London.

Keep an eye on Scalvini as a player going forwards, because this is a defender who has a huge ceiling.
