‘Going to play a big role’: Marsch hails Leeds talent who’s ‘much better than we had hoped’

Leeds United manager Jesse Marsch has praised Whites defender Pascal Struijk for his efforts at left-back this season.

The Elland Road boss said the 23-year-old had been “much better than we had hoped” for in that position.

Struijk has filled the void at left-back since Junior Firpo was ruled out with injury during pre-season in July.

The Dutchman – who has just received his first Netherlands call-up – has played every minute so far for Leeds this term.

Leeds are back in action on Saturday afternoon as they host Brentford at Elland Road.

Marsch has received a boost in the shape of a number of returns from injury.

Junior Firpo, Luke Ayling, Patrick Bamford and captain Liam Cooper are all vying to be involved on Saturday.

“Fantastic”

Stuart Dallas is the only player bar Rodrigo out with a long-term injury.

Marsch was asked who he felt was the best pairing at centre-back, with everybody back.

And Struijk, Cooper, Diego Llorente and Robin Koch all came in for praise, as quoted by Leeds Live.

“Pascal, in this left-back quasi centre-back sometimes three build-up, sometimes four build-up, has also been fantastic, much better than we had hoped,” said Marsch.

“All four of those guys are going to play a big role. I think there’s competition now in the squad, in a really healthy and competitive way.”

“I am getting more used to it”

Struijk recently told BBC Radio Leeds that he feels he’s growing into the left-back role.

He said: “In the beginning I had to get used to the way of moving and tactics that the gaffer wants.

“I am getting more used to it. I seem to find my way better each time.

“I’m enjoying it so far. The last few games finding my rhythm in a new position is really good for me.

“Whenever I play I always try to do my best. If that is at left-back or centre-back, I just try to stay in the team.

“This is the goal for every player. I just try to give 100 percent every single game.”
