Sam Byram joined West Ham United from Leeds United in 2016 for £3.7 million, according to the Evening Standard.
The versatile performer was seen as a star in the making following his switch but things haven’t quite gone according to plan.
A series of unfortunate injuries have seen his career regress somewhat. A loan spell at Forest was supposed to ignite regular football this season but injury has struck again.
Given his lack of game time at the City Ground, it seems likely that he will be sent out on loan again next season.
That could open the door for Scottish Premiership giants Celtic.
Right-back has been a problem position for the Hoops this season. Mikael Lustig has been the most frequent performer there, although his contract ends in the summer.
Jeremy Toljan signed from Dortmund in January but has played just eight times and will depart at the end of the season.
On Saturday against Livingston, Kristoffer Ajer deputised at right-back.
Byram’s quality would undoubtedly shine through in Scotland and his ability to bomb forward in attack would be welcomed given Celtic’s style of playing on the front foot.
If the Hoops can get a full season out of the 25-year-old without another injury then it would put them in the box seat for his permanent signature. The ex-Leeds man is out of contract at the end of next season.
Rangers are determined to come roaring back at Celtic next season and some summer recruits would be welcomed at Parkhead.
Byram’s arrival would represent a coup to a club north of the border and offer a reminder to Rangers that Celtic are still the team to beat.
