Report: Junior Firpo now open to leaving Leeds United, he could rejoin his former club

Leeds United defender Junior Firpo is now open to leaving Elland Road, with ElDesmarque reporting that he could rejoin his former club Real Betis.

Firpo only signed for the Whites back in 2021 as he completed a £13 million switch from Barcelona

The 26-year-old has struggled to nail down a starting place in the Leeds side and was ruled out of the beginning of the current campaign with a knee injury.

Pascal Struijk filled in at left-back in his absence but the centre-back has performed well in the role, leaving Firpo to limited opportunities since returning.

Jesse Marsch said that Firpo will be his first-choice left-back over the summer and that he has great confidence in the player.

But the Dominican Republic ace is now open to the idea of re-joining his former club after finding opportunities hard to come by this season.

Firpo now open to leaving Leeds

ElDesmarque reports that Real Betis are now looking at replacing Alex Moreno after the left-back made the switch to Aston Villa on Tuesday.

The La Liga outfit have identified their former player Firpo as a possible candidate to replace Moreno – three years after he left the club to join Barca.

Firpo’s current deal at Elland Road is set to run until 2025 and the outlet notes that a potential switch to Betis would ‘not be easy’.

But due to playing a back-up role to Struijk since his return from injury, Firpo is now open to the idea of leaving Leeds.

It’s fair to say that Firpo hasn’t enjoyed the best of times since moving to West Yorkshire. The left-back has often been a liability defensively for Leeds and Struijk seems like a more solid option in the position for now.

But it remains to be seen whether Marsch would be willing to let the player leave this month, especially with a lack of options at left-back.

Firpo has been described as an ‘outstanding’ talent but it just hasn’t worked out for him at Leeds and if Marsch could sign an upgrade this month, it would benefit his side massively.
