Sam Allardyce says £40m player who Tottenham want to sign has improved so much recently

Sam Allardyce believes reported Tottenham Hotspur target Conor Gallagher has improved so much recently.

The former Leeds boss was speaking on talkSPORT this morning and singled out one of Ange Postecoglou’s top transfer targets for praise.

Tottenham were heavily linked with a move for Conor Gallagher over the summer and even explored a deadline-day move for the midfielder.

Indeed, Spurs were attempting to offload Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg in an attempt to bring in Gallagher.

A move to North London failed to materialise for the 23-year-old, despite Postecoglou viewing him as the ideal profile for his midfield.

Gallagher has since established himself as a regular starter at Chelsea under Mauricio Pochettino. And Sam Allardyce believes the midfielder has improved dramatically over the past couple of years.

Allardyce praises Tottenham target Gallagher

Gallagher played under Allardyce during a loan spell at West Brom during the 2020-21 campaign.

The former Baggies boss was asked who he thinks can break into England’s starting line-up ahead of next year’s Euros and he singled out Gallagher for praise.

“Probably the last two I said there, [Rico] Lewis and [Cole] Palmer,” Allardyce told talkSPORT. “Who else comes after that?

“Conor Gallagher’s making a bid. He was just a youngster at West Brom when I was there in a side that was really struggling.

“He’s come a long, long way in the last couple of years.”

Gallagher enjoyed a brilliant spell at Crystal Palace after his time at West Brom came to an end following relegation.

He had struggled to make a similar impact at Chelsea last season as he failed to nail down a place in the side.

Yet, he’s found his best form under Pochettino and it would be a surprise to see him leave Chelsea anytime soon.

He’s already hinted he could sign a new deal with the Blues, which would all but end Tottenham’s pursuit of the midfielder.
