‘Slipped up’… Sam Allardyce says club made a big mistake selling their 21-year-old player to Chelsea 

Sam Allardyce believes Manchester City have made a big mistake by selling Cole Palmer to Chelsea over the summer.

Speaking on talkSPORT this morning, the former Premier League boss named Cole Palmer as a player who could emerge as a surprise starter for England at next year’s Euros.

The 21-year-old has enjoyed an exceptional start to life at Stamford Bridge after leaving Manchester City.

Chelsea snapped up Palmer for a fee worth £42.5 million over the summer and eyebrows were raised at the time.

Yet, the former City youngster has starred under Mauricio Pochettino, registering six goal involvements in 10 league appearances.

His bright start to the season earned him a call-up to Gareth Southgate’s England squad last week and he made his debut against Malta on Friday.

And Sam Allardyce has raved about Palmer’s potential while claiming City have made a huge mistake in letting him leave.

Allardyce was asked who he thinks could force their way into Southgate’s plans for next year’s Euros.

“Who else is going to come along like Jude Bellingham and take the reins and drop into the team? What a fantastic player,” he said on talkSPORT this morning. 

“Will it be Palmer this time? What a prospect he looks. It looks like Man City have slipped up selling him. I don’t know what you think.”

And pundit Neil Ruddock agreed: “Amazing they let him go. Unbelievable player.”

City’s decision to allow Palmer to leave did come as a surprise at the time after the youngster had impressed in pre-season.

He also netted in the UEFA Super Cup final for City back in August, which ultimately led to them winning the game on penalties.

Pep Guardiola is short of options on the right-hand side after selling Riyad Mahrez, while Kevin De Bruyne has since picked up an injury. 

Nevertheless, City’s loss is certainly Chelsea’s gain in this case and the Blues have snapped up one of the most exciting English prospects around at the moment.
