£50m Arsenal player now pushing to start vs Wolves, Mikel Arteta could drop 25-year-old

Arsenal star Ben White is reportedly pushing to start against Wolves today, which could lead to Takehiro Tomiyasu dropping to the bench.

That’s according to The Evening Standard, with the outlet claiming that Ben White could return to the starting line-up after making the bench against RC Lens on Wednesday.

White missed out on the win over Burnley earlier this month and only featured for a minute against Brentford last weekend.

The 26-year-old has been struggling with a muscle injury but did get 45 minutes under his belt in the 6-0 win over Lens.

Takehiro Tomiyasu has performed well at right-back in his absence and grabbed two assists in the Champions League on Wednesday.

But the Japan international could lose his place in Mikel Arteta’s side against Wolves today.

The Standard reports that White is ‘pushing’ to come back into the team after returning from injury.

It’s noted that Leandro Trossard could also regain his place in the side today, with Arsenal keeping an eye on their trip to Luton on Tuesday.

This could mean that Tomiyasu is rotated today as Arteta bids to keep his side on top of the Premier League table with a win over Wolves.

Of course, White has been exceptional for Arsenal ever since his £50 million switch from Brighton back in 2021.

The Englishman has excelled at right-back since the start of last season. But it would feel harsh to drop Tomiyasu today.

Indeed, the Japanese defender has stepped up brilliantly in White’s absence and at least deserves an opportunity to continue his run in the side today.

The 25-year-old is such a useful player for Arteta due to his ability to play in any position across the backline.

But Arteta may have one eye on a difficult trip to Luton next week, where he could turn to Tomiyasu to provide a more solid option in defence.
