Newcastle now considering signing ‘rapid’ £25m Everton defender in January

Newcastle United are searching for a new defender in January and their pursuit could lead them to Everton’s Ben Godfrey.

The £25m Toffees defender has struggled to hold down a regular spot in the XI under Sean Dyche and he has featured just the once this season.

However, that hasn’t put potential suitors off and according to 90Min, Newcastle are looking at Godfrey as one of their options at centre-back.

An injury to Sven Botman has left the Mags short at the back and Eddie Howe is hoping that PIF back him in January in a number of positions. The Toon are also said to be keen on a new striker, with Hugo Ekitike a player of interest.

Newcastle spent more money in the summer but the suspension of Sandro Tonali has rocked the club a bit and their form has suffered.

Newcastle keen on Everton’s Ben Godfrey

Godfrey, still just 25, arguably has his best years ahead of him and could help provide Newcastle with at least a short-term fix for this season.

Going into the future, Godfrey would no doubt be considered a player for Eddie Howe to coach and improve, much like he has done with the likes of Anthony Gordon and Sean Longstaff.

Godfrey is a wanted man though and Newcastle won’t have a clean run at things. Recent reports have suggested Tottenham also like the Everton defender.

Lauded for his ‘rapid‘ speed by fellow Everton players, Godfrey might well be open to a move in January given his current situation at Goodison Park.

With Everton also handed a 10-point penalty today, the Toffees could be in for a rocky few months and Godfrey might well consider getting out the best step.

Further, Everton might also feel they can get a fee for Godfrey and use that to strengthen a touch in January.
