Jamie Carragher shares the punishment Everton should have been given rather than points deduction

Everton have been handed a points deduction by the Premier League this afternoon and Jamie Carragher has been speaking on the situation.

The Toffees have been docked ten points due to failures over FFP. Everton are expected to appeal the deduction and there is now a close eye on the likes of Manchester City and Chelsea.

Of course, the news has caused quite the stir in the footballing world. Pundits and journalists have been responding to the news in their own way with various takes on the matter.

Jamie Carragher is one of those who seems surprised by the penalty. And he’s been speaking on Sky Sports today about why it seems so excessive.

Jamie Carragher on Everton points deduction

Speaking live on Sky Sports just now, Carragher has said that given the fine the Super League breakaways got, Everton have been harshly treated.

“For me, taking points off clubs is really tough. I think it has to be a last resort really for me. Certainly you can have transfer embargos, fine. Certainly for a club like Everton right now going over the threshold I think by £20m, when I think it was £105m, it feels very excessive,” Carragher said on Sky.

“I do feel for Everton right now when you consider what’s happening with other clubs right now. Also the fact there were six big clubs, what happened with the Super League a few years ago when they threatened to leave the league and there was a £22m fine split between the clubs. When you compare that to what Everton have been involved in and it’s now a ten point deduction and they’re bottom of the league, yes, I think it’s excessive.”

Everton will now do their due diligence and look to see if they can worm out of the predicament they find themselves in.

The Toffees, as it stands, are in the bottom three but due to the poor form of those already in there, are only a couple of points from being safe again.
