‘I wanted to stay’… £34m PL player suggests he had no interest in joining Arsenal in the summer

Amadou Onana has stated he had no intention of leaving Everton this summer despite strong reported interest from the likes of Arsenal.

Speaking to Transfermarkt, the £34m midfielder revealed that he did not want to depart Goodison Park, with Onana admitting that clubs did come calling for him in the transfer window over a potential transfer.

Onana said: “Clubs came knocking, but I wanted to stay to develop further and become a top player at Everton, perhaps the best.

“I try to read almost nothing about it and keep it as far away from me as possible. I just want to concentrate on what’s important.”

With Arsenal still reportedly interested in Onana, the midfielder made a bold decision in deciding to stay at Everton, especially when considering the Toffees poor start to the season.

Indeed, the Gunners have also been in constant contact with Onana, making the midfielder’s recent comments even more respectable considering what was potentially on offer this summer.

Considering Everton’s problems both on and off the pitch, it’s quite incredible that a player as good as Onana would choose to stay with the Merseyside club rather than jump ship to Arsenal.

Yet that’s exactly what the youngster seemingly did this summer, with a big move in 2024 likely on the table for Onana if he can again impress in the Premier League.

With Arsenal still interested, Onana could still complete a dream transfer if the Gunners remain in the race, and a big season at Everton could be the best thing possible for the midfielder’s development.
