Report: Conte wanted ‘scintillating’ £25m man this summer, he even asked his players for their opinion

Tottenham lost 3-1 to Arsenal yesterday and there was a distinct lack of options on the bench for Antonio Conte.

Despite a quadruple change in the second half by Conte, most of those players were of a defensive mind, with the likes of Dejan Kulusevski and Lucas Moura missing through injury. It led to questions about Tottenham’s depth from some and all eyes will be on January.

However, according to Football London, Tottenham might well have had another attacking option in the ranks in the form of Welsh winger, Daniel James. As we know, reports right at the end of the window claimed Tottenham were in the mix to try and sign James from Leeds. Of course, he ended up at Fulham on loan.

But FL has solidified those claims by suggesting that Antonio Conte had even asked some of his squad for opinions on the former Manchester United man. Naturally, Ben Davies will know him best from their time with Wales, while Joe Rodon – who left the club himself – also knows James well.

Assessed as a ‘scintillating’ winger by tactical breakdown website Breaking The Lines, James was a surprise departure from Leeds, given they’d paid around £25m not too long ago to sign him.

TBR’s View: James Would Have Been Ideal For Tottenham Yesterday

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but with how Tottenham set up yesterday, you have to say that Dan James would have been ideal for Spurs.

They played deep and on the counter attack against Arsenal and at times there were huge spaces for them to exploit in the first half which James would have been ideal in.

It’s interesting to read Conte asked his players about signing James as well. That shows there was something in this deal and on another day, it might have happened.
